BIDS FOR BUILDING ATHLETES' VILLAGE BEING EVALUATED
The deadline has passed for contractors to submit proposals to build the athletes' village project for the 2015 Pan American Games to be held in Toronto.
Submissions will now be evaluated based on criteria in the request for proposals (RFP).
The successful bidder will be announced this summer.
The village will be built in the area known as the West Don Lands in Toronto and provide accommodations for up to 8,000 Pan American and 2,200 Parapan American athletes and officials during the Games.
The village will include additional facilities such as a media centre, transport mall, dining hall and polyclinic, where athletes can receive a range of healthcare services.
After the Games, the Village area will become a mixed-use and pedestrian-friendly riverside community that will include affordable housing.
The RFP was issued in January and short-listed teams were invited to submit bids for the project.
The short-listed teams included Dundee Kilmer Developments Ltd., Legacy Village Partners, and Village Infrastructure Partners.
Infrastructure Ontario is working to procure and deliver the athletes' village as well as other Games venues across the Greater Toronto Area and Golden Horseshoe, such as an aquatics centre, a velodrome and Pan Am stadium.
Earlier, companies were invited to bid on building an aquatics centre, field house and Canadian Sport Institute Ontario project for the Games on the Scarborough campus of the University of Toronto.
The aquatics centre will feature two 10-lane, 52-metre pools and a five-metre-deep diving tank, and have a seating capacity of approximately 6,000.
The field house, which will have a maximum seating capacity of approximately 2,000, will house an indoor recreational track, fitness facilities and approximately 1,800 square_metres of flexible gymnasium space for training and competition._
The Sport Institute will serve as a national high-performance centre, providing sport science, sport medicine, coaching and training facilities._
The Games are held every four years for athletes of the 42-member nations of the Pan American Sport Organization. It is one of the world's largest international multi-sport events.
The Pan Am Games take place July 10 to 26, 2015 and the Parapan American Games take place Aug. 7 to 14, 2015.
